We wire cameras back to a recorder that sits in your house. The recording, the detection and the alerts all happen on hardware you own. Nothing leaves the property unless you decide to send it, and there is no monthly bill attached to watching your own front door.

We install both, and they are not competing for the same house. UniFi Protect suits larger properties and camera counts from around six upward. It handles heavy loads gracefully, does number plate recognition well, and its interface holds up when there are a lot of cameras to sift through.

Reolink covers the other end honestly and cheaply. On a townhouse or a smaller home running two to four cameras, it does the same core job for meaningfully less money, and paying for the enterprise option would be spending for capability you will never reach.

A motion alert is worthless if a moth on the lens sets it off at two in the morning. After a week of that, everyone mutes the notifications, and the system is now decorative.

Detection runs on local hardware and distinguishes people, vehicles and animals, so an alert that reaches your phone is one worth reading. Known faces and known number plates can be filtered out entirely, which stops the system informing you that you have arrived home.

Battery cameras trade away the two things that matter most. They wake on motion, which means they routinely miss the beginning of the event you wanted to see, and they fade in a heatwave, which in Melbourne is precisely when you were counting on them.
