A smart home is one system, not a drawer full of apps

Most homes end up with smart devices rather than a smart home. The lights use one app, the cameras use another, the heating has its own remote, and nothing knows what anything else is doing. Every device works, and yet the house is no easier to live in than it was before.

A smart home is what you get when all of it answers to a single system. The house knows whether anyone is home, whether it is dark, whether rain is coming, and whether you are asleep. Once it knows those things, it can act on them without being asked.

Why it should run in your house, not someone else's

Cloud based smart homes send every button press to a data centre and wait for permission to come back. When the internet drops, so does your light switch. When the manufacturer changes its pricing, or shuts the service down, the hardware on your wall becomes decoration.

We build on Home Assistant, running on a small computer in your home. Automations, cameras and voice control are processed locally, so the house keeps working when the connection does not, and nothing about how your family lives is anyone else's business.

Old house or new, the approach is the same

Melbourne housing stock runs from double brick and weatherboard through to new builds where the plaster is not up yet. That changes the wiring plan, not the design. In an established home we lean on wireless protocols and existing circuits, and only run cable where it genuinely earns it. In a new build we specify the cabling before the walls close, which is far cheaper than opening them later.

Either way, licensed electricians do anything that touches mains, and you get a written plan showing exactly what goes where before anyone starts.

Start with one room, or the whole house

There is no minimum. Plenty of homes begin with lighting in the living areas, or cameras at the front door, and grow from there. Because the foundation is one system rather than a set of separate products, adding the next thing later is cheap. The hub, the network and the wiring are already in place.

Do I need to replace the smart devices I already own?

Usually not. Most mainstream gear speaks one of the open standards, and if it does, it can generally be brought into the system rather than thrown out. We confirm exactly what is reusable during the audit, before you spend anything.

What happens when the internet goes down?

The house keeps working. Automations, lighting, cameras and local voice control all run on the hardware in your home, so they do not need the connection. You lose remote access from outside the house until it comes back, and nothing else.

Are there ongoing costs once it is installed?

No subscription, no cloud storage plan and no per device licence. You own the hardware and the system outright. The only ongoing cost is the electricity to run a small computer, which is a few dollars a year.

How much does a smart home cost in Melbourne?

Honestly, it depends entirely on scope, and anyone quoting a figure before seeing your house is guessing. A single room of lighting and a hub is a modest job.
